By Yuval Israel, Year 12
This past school year, the Year 10 mentor classes have conducted research on different types of addictions. Some of the addictions being social media and smartphone addiction.
Considering the upcoming phone ban, this could not have been a better time for us to be informed on the dangerous consequences of our addictions to our screens. Down below are four of the winning posters:
Social Media addiction
The winner of Mrs. Donnelly’s mentor class is Inès Leach. Inès’s poster accentuated the problematic use of excessive social media use. How the media gains information by remembering what video’s we liked and which we didn’t. Creating an algorithm feeding into our addiction! Inès even managed to capture the neuroscience behind addiction, linking our daily lives and science!
Smartphone addiction
The winners of Mr. Anderson’s class are Tania Iyer, Max Golchin and Esther Tulchinskaya. Their poster highlighted the mental consequences of smartphone addiction such as depression, insomnia and anxiety. Like Inès, they also focused on the different fun ways to treat our addictions; journaling, athletics, social interactions and even meditations!
Caffeine addiction
The winners of Mr Devilles class are Maé Liengme, Charlotte Pienaar and Imogen Elford. Their poster was researched around concentrated abuse of caffeine in our daily lives. They also discovered the reasons many people believe caffeine keeps you concentrated and the common sources in which it can be found.
Nicotine addiction (smoking)
The winners of Mr Manchala’s class are Gabriel Bialystok-Joly and Fraser James. Their poster underlined the components of cigarette smoke, the health effects associated with smoking and the quitting methods.
Bravo to all the winners! More posters to come!
