The novel, Beautiful Boy, tells a very touching story of a father’s journey dealing with a son addicted to drugs. It is a very sentimental story that shows vulnerability, the importance of family, and the effects of addiction. It is also very educational with much information about drugs, specifically methylamphetamine.
It’s a slow novel that explains their life from the time his son, Nic, was born until he recovered from his addiction. Nic started drugs when he was only twelve years old. He started with cannabis and alcohol saying he was only trying them once. Over the years his drug use increased and over time he was using copious amounts of drugs, mostly methylamphetamine. Throughout the novel, you can feel him pulling away and getting worse. He becomes truculent, lifeless, and exhausted. Reading this novel felt like a rollercoaster of emotions. At some points, you’re agog that he’s doing better, then all of a sudden he vanishes again and comes back much worse.
Reading this story from the father’s perspective helps to connect with him and feel his vulnerability. His raw and emotional language and storytelling touched my heart. Many people can relate to family members or friends who are struggling with addiction. These people might feel guilty; that it’s their fault or they could’ve done more. This is exactly what the father is struggling with. This story shows that it is not anyone’s fault and this can happen to anyone.
What makes this story even more heartwarming is the fact that it is based on the author, David Sheff’s true story dealing with his son, Nic Sheff’s addiction. The way the author writes is so natural and ordinary that you feel as if he is speaking directly to you. This is because it’s based on his true story. Nic Sheff is now thirteen years sober, an advocate for mental health and addiction, happily married, and has written two memoirs (“Tweak: Growing up on methamphetamine”, and “We All Fall Down: Living with addiction”). David Sheff now lives a calm life with his wife, Karen Barbour. Furthermore, this novel has now been adapted into a popular movie starring Timothee Chalamet and Steve Carell.
In my opinion, this book is incredible. It’s inspiring, touching, and deeply educational. I’ve learned so much about addiction, the devastating effects of drugs, and the challenging journey of recovery. As Nic’s battle with methamphetamine unfolds, the book portrays the devastating impact drugs can have on a person’s life, serving as a warning for anyone considering trying them. What stands out the most is the strength of the people in this story. Despite everything they’ve endured, they show remarkable strength and determination to get through everything. Their courage and ability to overcome such a dark period is truly inspiring. This book is written in such a raw, genuine way that makes you reflect on life, addiction, and the power of hope. It is a must-read to open your mind and broaden your perspective.
