By Sara Abdalla, Year 12
On December 6th 2024, the long-awaited Spotify Wrapped — a compilation of all the music Spotify users have listened to throughout the year — was released. The viral marketing campaign present since 2016 has been a highlight of the year for many. With so many differing opinions on the rewind as a whole, we thought best to ask LGB’s students all about their music journey throughout the year, along with their views on the Spotify Wrapped phenomena:
Who were your top artists this year?
The music taste of LGB’s students has turned out to be just as diverse as the school itself, with answers ranging from pop-star sensations like Taylor Swift, R&B icons like Frank Ocean, and K-POP stars like Stray Kids.
How many minutes did you listen to Spotify in 2024?
Surprisingly — or not-so-surprising to avid music-listeners — the minutes listened have ranged from a cool 13,244 minutes to a whopping 100,637, with the average LGB student ranking somewhere in between.
What was your most listened to song?
Again, the answers varied significantly, further showcasing the variety in Ecolint students. In Year 12, Elena stated her top song was “Doo Wop“ by Lauryn Hill, whereas another LGB student stated theirs was “I love you, I’m sorry” by Gracie Abrams (played 63 times this year!)
Do you think this year’s Spotify Wrapped was accurate to what you listened to?
Spotify seems to be doing something right this year as 75% of the interviewed participants answered “Yes”, while only 25% answered “Kind of”. Hopefully these good reviews will continue into next year!
What could Spotify improve on for next year’s Spotify Wrapped?
The most common critique from LGB students was the lack of features compared to last year. For example, many requested for Spotify to add their top genres to the rewind, as well as more slides and, as Nyla from Year 12 requested, to make the Top Artists more accurate.
What do you prefer to listen to music on?
Spotify isn’t the only company to have a yearly rewind of their users’ listening history. When asked which app they prefer to listen to music with, 3 quarters of the questionnaire participants answered Spotify, while the remaining 25% answered Apple Music. Seems like Spotify has some competition!
Has your music taste changed throughout the year?
As we grow and change throughout the year, our music preferences tend to grow with us. Cormac in Year 12 remarked that “[their] music taste will often reflect, in some capacity, what is going on in [their] life more broadly”. Another LGB student answered that their music taste had shifted from Rap to Pop as the year progressed.
Do you like Spotify Wrapped?
Overwhelmingly, every participant answered a firm yes on that remark. Most specifically, LGB students’ favorite parts of the rewind were getting to look back on their music history! However, some still held their reservations about a quality drop in this year’s VS. last year’s Spotify Wrapped, with one student remarking that “it felt kinda bland”.
Overall, I think we can all agree that Spotify Wrapped has been a fun, and oftentimes intriguing experience that’s consistently marked the end of our year and the start of a new one. Happy early New Years!
