By Laurin Rupp, Year 12
It was a rather cold winter’s evening, a poor boy was home alone crouched in front of his computer trying to write an article for the sports section of the LGB Express, when suddenly a light flashed before his eyes, and for an instant he seemed almost enlightened with knowledge, and it occurred to him that he had completely forgotten to talk about the “League du Lac” basketball tournament that took place on the weekend of the 21 November.
It is in fact a little late to talk about it now, but there were so many interesting things going on around that time that we completely forgot to mention it. The League du Lac is one of the most important tournaments during the year for the basketball team, stretching out from Friday to Sunday. The tournament took place in Leysin, and they played against numerous strong opponents, not limited to simply the other Ecolint campuses, but also including teams from all around this area of Switzerland.
In the last 4 years, the Basketball team made it to the finals twice, and also won twice. This year however was quite incredible. The team consisted of only 7 people this time, which is really not a lot, since many others couldn’t come. Still they made it relatively easily to the finals, where they faced off against CDL. You have to know that just a few weeks previously they had a practice game against them and lost quite badly with a 15-point difference, and that was when over 10 team members were present.
This time they were far fewer, and were missing key players, however the team played so well that they kept up with CDL all through out the game, and in the last quarter (meaning the last 10 minutes) they were even leading by a couple points at times. 30 seconds left in the game, our team made the shot and was 1 point ahead, until in the very last seconds CDL got a steal, ran for the basket and made the layup, finishing the game with a 1 point lead. Unfortunately that meant second place for LGB, but the team wasn’t very discontent, since they played an amazing game.
We wish the basketball team all the best in their next tournament, and hopefully they will beat CDL soon. Of course, it’s not about winning but having fun (in the true Jets spirit)!
