What to watch when you’re not studying?

By Ioannis Sistovaris, Year 12

The winter break has unfortunately already ended, and hopefully all of you enjoyed it. Whether it was in the snowy mountains, the sunny beach, or if it was simply a relaxing break at home, I think we can all agree that watching movies during our free time is something that everyone enjoys. In this article I will be sharing a list of “what to watch over the holidays” or quite frankly, anytime you feel like it.

At the movies:

I think that going to the movies has to be one of the most relaxing activities, and there is nothing as fun as to be able to watch one of your favourite movies on a big screen (with popcorn and a slushy of course). So, here are a few movies that I recommend:

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

The Hunger Games, originally a book series, was made into numerous movies, which has an avid fanbase. I went to watch the most recent one with a few friends and  found it very entertaining. However,  I did end up regretting not having watched the other Hunger Games movies a bit more recently as this movie is a prequel to the trilogy. The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes explores the backstory of the antagonist, Coriolanus Snow. If you have not watched any of the Hunger Games movies before, then I highly recommend you do so, following this order: The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, The Hunger Games, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, and finally, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2.

I rate this movie a solid 8/10, as regardless of not remembering the previous Hunger Games movies, with the help of my friends, I was able to understand and enjoy this movie.

Priscilla

I do not know if this was only my social media algorithm, but the movie Priscilla has been trending on social media platforms such as Tiktok and Instagram, and out of curiosity, I decided to go watch it. This movie is the story of a girl named Priscilla Beaulieu, who “meets Elvis Presley at a party, the man who is already a meteoric rock-and-roll superstar, and who becomes someone entirely unexpected in private moments”. I personally did not truly enjoy this movie as the story seemed rushed, and quite honestly, a bit hard to understand. However, I think if you were familiar with the story beforehand, it is still an interesting movie to watch as it gives the stage to one of the world’s most famous singers’ wives. Regardless of the movie being overrated on social media (in my humble opinion), I enjoyed it. (6/10)

Those were my top two favourite movies that I think would be worth watching that are currently streaming at the cinema.

At home:

Given Geneva is currently a snowy wonderland and that we are still most definitely in the Winter season, I think that some classics could be fun to watch such as: The Grinch, Home Alone or even Gremlins.

If you are a fan of horror movies, I recommend watching: any of the Scream movies, The Nun, Lights Out, and The Purge.

For comedy movies, my top 3 favourites would be: White Chicks, Norbit, and Project X.

Other movies that I would recommend watching would be: Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (this film is better if you have basic knowledge of the Marvel universe), Suicide Squad, Cruella, The Perks of being a Wallflower, Joker, American Psycho, Oppenheimer and finally Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.

I hope that this provides plenty of movie ideas for you to find something you will enjoy – have a relaxing night watching!
