Cinema night: A Charitable Event for the India Project

By Yuval Israel, Year 10

Aida Windells is part of a Year 10 mentor class that organized an enjoyable cinema night for middle and high school students on the 25 – 26 of January. There were a large variety of movies to choose from such as Legally Blonde to The Hunger Games in order to increase the appeal for students of different age groups. They had different genres to increase viewers, as it was open to students from ages 10 – 18. This event was chosen in order to help raise money for a charity of their choice: The India project.

What was the event for?

”Our mentor class organized a movie night for our service project. The money we raised will go to a charity, which we have chosen will be the India project. We also all chipped in to bring and bake snacks so that students will be able to grab snacks during or after the screening. We sold 5 CHF for a ticket and 1 – 4 CHF for snacks which in the end allowed us to raise around 318 CHF for the project.”

What movies did your class screen and why?

“On the first night, we showed movies: our comedy favourite, Legally Blonde and the action film, the Hunger Games. The second night it was: Paddington and an all-time classic, the Parent trap. We chose these movies due to the fact we wanted a wide variety of movies to appeal to students of different ages and also, different genres, so everybody could watch something that appealed to them.”

Why did your class choose to host this event?

“We chose to organize a movie night because we wanted an idea that could be fun and help bring the Ecolint community together for an enjoyable relaxing night, which could also raise money for a good cause.”

Why did you choose this particular charity and not others?

“Before we chose to donate our money to the India Project, we considered donating it to other charities such as Make-A-Wish and others, but we thought it would be best and most fulfilling if we donated it to the India Project because we would not only be contributing to people in need, but also to our school. We thought it was a really important project and wanted to help out as much as possible.”

We then interviewed some anonymous students who came to the event to get their opinion.

“I watched the second half of the Hunger Games which I enjoyed, so I returned the second night to watch the Parent Trap, but due to technical difficulties it was cancelled which bummed me out, but a great idea in theory overall”

“The cinema night on the 25th and 26th of January that was organized by Mrs Windell’s mentor group was overall good. I went to support the fundraiser on the 25th of January which was on a Wednesday. On that day, there were two movies promised; Legally Blond and the hunger games. I bought tickets to see both. There was a variety of drinks and snacks at the entrance. At around 3:30 p.m., which is when the movie was supposed to start there was a slight delay, but it all went well. When the movie started, it went well: the volume was just right, the screen was not blurry and the overall ambience was great. Halfway through the movie though, there was a technical issue but they handled it professionally and the movie continued shortly after. When the movie ended, the next movie that was supposed to be shown was The Hunger Games. Unfortunately, I was the only one that bought a ticket for the second movie and I didn’t feel like watching it alone, especially since I’d already seen it. They offered to give me back the amount of money that I have paid for the second ticket but I refused and let them keep it as a donation. They offered some free snacks instead, which was very thoughtful of them.”

This turned out to be a successful movie night with much enthusiasm which many students vastly enjoyed!
