LGB Students React to the Death of Queen Elizabeth II

By Ioannis Sistovaris, year 11

Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor, internationally known as Queen Elizabeth II, was born on the 21st of April, 1928. After her father King George VI passed away on June 2nd, 1952, she ascended to the throne at the early age of 25. At the beginning of her reign, she was not only Queen of the United Kingdom but of many countries in the British Commonwealth and Empire such as Australia, Canada, South Africa, India, and Pakistan.

I, personally, was very upset to learn on September 8th, 2022 of the Queen’s passing. Not only was she the longest-reigning British monarch but also the longest-living sovereign that Britain has ever known. I did not personally know her nor am I English but I can assure you that I was quite affected by her death. After all, we all grew up knowing who she was, haven’t we? This is why I took the initiative to interview some LGB students in order to find out their opinions of this tragic event.

What is your opinion on Queen Elizabeth II’s death?

“It was quite upsetting to see such influential women pass, especially since her successor [King Charles III] is a male known for great controversial scandals” Tamara, year 11

“I was quite sad, but after all, it was of natural cause and she lived a long and comfortable life until the age of 96” Melanie, year 11

“I was in England when the news was out. I can assure you that silence reigned in the whole of London for a few instances.” Elena, year 11

Did it impact you?

“It did not impact me personally, but my heart goes out to the entire royal family going through this hard loss.” Tamara, year 11

“No, it did not really impact me; I am not a royalist. However, I think the Queen was considered a grandmother  by many English citizens” Elena, year 11

“I was not affected by the death so much. However, I go visit some family in the UK quite often so hopefully, things won’t change too much with the new King.” Tilly, year 11

Do you happen to know anyone who was extremely moved by the news?

“My brothers, they were both very upset. Both of them live in London and went to pay their respects in Buckingham Palace by giving out flowers.” Tamara, year 11

“I was with my family when it happened. My grandfather did not really show emotions but my mother had a few tears running down her cheeks.” Laetitia, year 11

How do you feel about King Charles coming to the throne after almost a century of Queen Elizabeth’s reign?

“I don’t really know how to feel about him. Although, I think it is quite funny that he got his first job in his 70s.” Melanie, year 11

“Things are definitely going to change in England but hopefully the country keeps its stability.” Laetitia, year 11

“I heard that he was following many climate change issues. Hopefully, he will manage to make a sustainable change.”  Tilly, year 11

“Personally, I am quite horrified and skeptical of the news. He wants to get involved with politics and already gave Prince Andrew’s title back after Queen Elizabeth took it away from him.” Elena, year 11
