The Hour of Code

Starting today the Computer Science Education week starts! It is held annually in recognition of Grace Hopper who was a computer scientist as well as an admiral for the US Navy. She was a pioneer in computer science because she devised the first commercial electronic computer. The idea is to get students all over the world to start learning more about coding, computer science and all its applications. Since we are all becoming more dependent on technology, it is time that students start learning about how to code otherwise they would all be unable to understand how the technology, that they have become so dependent on, works. During this week, an event called “Hour of Code” will take place and it is simply a one hour introduction to computer science. However due to its worldwide expansion and the amount of people who have taken a great amount of interest in it, there has been an increase of community efforts globally to help expand the understanding of computer science.

Here in LGB, several events have been organised. On Monday, for example, there will be lessons on how to create your own app. For the rest of the week, there will be programming courses such as Python, courses about creating your own video game, courses like CS Unplugged where and many more! People also have the opportunity to learn about encryption which is a key aspect of our everyday lives. To whoever is reading this I suggest to take the time to come to the STEM center during this week and learn more about computer science and programming because now is the time to learn. Without understanding algorithms, codes and encryption, you will be missing out on learning about the technology which has and will continue to be an important aspect of our lives and is something that we all have become dependent on.
