One week on from the tense, violent and vivacious semi-final victory at Le Rosey, our very own LGB Senior boys football team prepares to return for the much-anticipated final of the ADISR Championship.
They face our Ecolint brethren, La Châtaigneraie, a team who themselves experienced a mixed tournament, losing to a comfortable LGB 3 to nil in the replay of the group stages. However, the first round in mid-October shows promise for La Chat as they secured a somewhat easy 3 points against an LGB team lacking several key players.
A week ago, LGB barely scraped their way past Le Rosey. It was a tough 2-1 win, marred by injuries, yellow cards, and the anxious flip-flop between dead quiet and rowdy cheers that often accompanies a cup game away from home. In a way, it was fortunate; two penalties handed our boys the victory, one in the last 3 minutes of the second half of extra time! But in no way was it not deserved. Le Rosey created few chances, scoring a chaotic tussle of a goal in the second half following an error in LGB’s defensive positioning on the right hand side of the field. After this, LGB fought to keep it level at 1-1 despite the setback of losing two key players to injury.
Of course, it is traditional among the LGB Seniors to ensure that no substitutes were available after the injuries (we blame IB). A 5 minute suspension following an LGB Junior’s decision to pick up the ball to allow treatment for yet another injury meant that Le Rosey’s 11 players plus a dozen subs were playing 9 exhausted LGB players. A last-ditch effort to barge our way into the opposing team’s defence forced the penalty that won us the game.
“Feels like Christmas to shut that crowd up” exclaimed Vitalis, team captain of LGB. “Oh, and that drone” Of course, Le Rosey had a drone that sat over our goalie for most of the game!
Our double goalscorer, Craig Forbes, said what everyone was thinking, about the next game, “coming back here’s going to tough. But today was a great result and if we play like we know we can play we can get another one next week.”
All that remains to be said is, tomorrow evening, game on!
