Shows and documentaries have been all anyone can talk about at our school. At the LGB Express we try to persuade students to have an open mind and try out new things. These include: books, movies and shows. Here are a few of the most loved movies and shows from the students at our school and their opinions on them.
The Social Dilemma
The show was in the top watched Netflix movies list and has received worldwide acclimation. It has been attributed “the most important documentary of our time” by several media personalities. The Social Dilemma examines how large social media corporations utilise technology to influence consumers and create addiction to their services. The Social Dilemma was viewed by 38 million people.
The Tinder Swindler
The Tinder Swindler is an informative documentary film based on a true story. The story is about the journey of a man, Simon Leviev, using the dating app Tinder to meet people and make them instantly fall in love with him, all while deceiving and tricking them into financially supporting his sudden urgent need for money. The film focuses on three cases of women who have both experienced Simon’s manipulation, and received frequent death threats after enduring the hoax of the conman. Many thought of this film as eye-opening and alarming as “It shows how animalistic, self-obsessed, materialistic, and uninhibited humans have become thanks to: social media.” Also, The Tinder Swindler has created awareness about the dangers of social media, and although we are at different stages of our life, “we’re all susceptible and vulnerable.”
The Batman
The Batman is a 2022 action and adventure movie based on the well-known character Batman. It targets the story of Batman’s intense journey into Gotham City’s underground when a vicious killer leaves a trail of puzzling clues. He must develop new contacts, uncover the offender, and deliver justice to the misuse of power and corruption that has long plagued the city. Many agreed that the 3 hour film is quite long, but did note that it was definitely worth it. Some stated that “the cinematography is incredible”, “the acting is great”, “the thriller is palpable” and even that “the music’s hypnotising.”
Euphoria
If you are thinking of watching Euphoria I encourage you to read an article written by Désirée Blazier on the LGB Express website that goes into depth about the show, the cinematography and many opinions from different students, be sure to note it does contain mature themes and scenes. The show has been viewed by 16.3 million different viewers making it the most viewed HBO show other than game of thrones. It is told by one of the characters, Rue Benett, the character the show pretty much centres around. It is about a group of teenagers dealing with experiences they’ve gone through growing up and in the present time. The second season of the show has just been released and people at our school are talking about it non-stop.
“So sad that season 2 is over but can’t wait for season 3 but not excited to wait 2 years”
“I’ve been hooked to this show since the minute it came out”
“I love Zendaya and seeing her play Rue shows what an amazing actress she is”
Inventing Anna
Inventing Anna is based on the true story of Anna Sorokin, a socialite who successfully manages to pose as a wealthy German heiress in New York City under the name of Anna Delvey. We slowly watch her life unfold throughout the nine episodes of the TV series. Before being convicted of fraud and grand larceny, Anna defrauded friends and huge banks out of hundreds of thousands of dollars. The true story in itself, is insane, unbelievable, and terrifying for someone to be able to accomplish such an unexpected mission. This series takes an interesting and intriguing look at “striving women from different points of views.” People have said that it’s an entertaining series which “gets more interesting as you hit play next episode”, but “it is unrelatable”, and that real Anna appeared completely different from her character in the series.
Gilmore Girls
Gilmore girls is a series loved by many and even though it is over 22 years old it is still watched and talked about today. It tells the story of a mother and daughter’s relationship as best friends. Rory plays the young girl and Lorelai the mother. It describes Lorelai’s life once she ran away when she got pregnant with Rory. We get an inside look on both of their lives, relationships and friendships yet they always go back to each other and their stories are connected.
Student responses:
“My favourite show ever”
“You must watch this show at least once”
“This show encouraged me to start studying because Rory doesn’t stop studying”
“My comfort show”
Peaky Blinders
Peaky Blinders is the true story of Thomas Shelby, a vicious guy who is also the leader of the Birmingham-based Peaky Blinders gang. The series starts off by talking about an inspector, Chester Campbell, who tries to put a stop to all gangs and common criminals, especially the illicit activities of the Peaky Blinders gang. Will they get caught? Peaky Blinders is a high-quality drama for adults, but it is not appropriate for children. Point-blank gunshots, stabbings, impalements, torture, and threats of severe injuries like cut-out tongues are all common. Rather positive reviews have been made, people have said that “it’s the perfect blend of story, acting, dialogues, background music, romance”, and that Peaky Blinders “is one of the best TV series Netflix have produced till now.”
All of us are dead (지금 우리 학교는)
All of Us Are Dead is a South Korean horror streaming television series about a zombie outbreak. All Of Us Are Dead earned the top of Netflix’s daily Top 10 list in the United States. This is a significant achievement for South Korean entertainment, as the show is the second non-English-language series to achieve that rank. Korea is the first country to have three foreign-language series at the top of the streaming service’s charts, thanks to the success of Squid Game which you might know since it was a big hit at our school as well as Our Beloved Summer and of course All Of Us Are Dead.
We asked a few students what they thought of this show and got many different responses:
“If you enjoy zombie apocalypse shows like the walking dead you will definitely enjoy this”
“This show made me cry more than any show I’ve watched”
After having read this detailed article you now have plenty of ideas on what will be the next movie, TV show, or documentary that you will binge watch instead of doing your school work. So, what will you be watching?
