The Express went behind the scenes with Jonah O’Toole of Strike StuCo to find out more about what they have been working on.
One of the main goals of StuCo is for students to have access to iSams, which is beneficial since students would not need to ask their parents’ permission to view their grades and absences. This was a success for StuCo, as iSams is now available on all students’ My Ecolint accounts.
There have been other small improvements thanks to StuCo. First, music is now played in the cafeteria every day for students to enjoy. Clocks are now located in both temporary gyms, as there had been some complaints about the lack of clocks. The year 11s have been sent IB subject videos made by year 12 students to make sure they understand what it’s like to take a subject from a student’s perspective. There is also a Valentine’s Day event scheduled, where everyone had the chance to send chocolates to someone in school, either anonymously or signed.
With the relaxation of Covid measures in Switzerland, there are some exciting upcoming events as well. A talent show will be held very soon; Antoine, the chairman of Strike, is going to host a drawing competition for all that want to take part. Spirit week is also coming soon! There may also be a potential rap battle night scheduled sometime after April. Lastly, a referendum is in the making for all students to vote and discuss topics related to student life.
Behind the scenes, StuCo members have had many meetings to discuss life around school. Each week a StuCo member sits in on a gym meeting to ensure that the new gym is to the students’ liking. During the next few weeks, StuCo has several meetings, including a meeting with Mr. De Wilde to discuss how grades are assessed and a meeting with Nations StuCo is also planned to collaborate on events. Further meetings are scheduled to find other ways of helping students have a more comfortable school environment and StuCo has been meeting with year reps occasionally to discuss any issues brought up or any projects, such as adding hygiene products in the girls’ bathrooms. The StuCo members have met with Dr. Oj, head of year 12, to discuss mental health at school. StuCo believes student wellness is very important, not only for IB students but for all grades. Therefore they have worked to ensure there is clear communication between students and StuCo to make sure they do as much as possible to reinforce student wellness.
