The first-ever Winter Olympics was hosted in 1924 in Chamonix, France. This year, on the 4th of February, the 2022 Winter Olympics officially began in Beijing, China. This Winter Olympics included athletes from 91 countries participating in 15 different winter sports over the course of 16 days. The final day of this year’s Winter Olympics was the 20th of February.
The Express conducted a survey to see how many people on LGB’s campus had already watched this year’s Winter Olympics. More than half (52.8%) of those surveyed had watched. At LGB, the most popular sport out of the 15 was alpine skiing, potentially due to the school’s location in Switzerland. Coming in second place was figure skating, and in third place, a tie between three sports: speed skating, biathlon, and freestyle skiing.
Some reasons students put for why they chose their favorite sport was that it was the most interesting to them, that the sport was elegant, or that they actually did the sport in real life.
Most student opinions on the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics are similar. They think that it’s okay. Some people like the way their country’s uniform looks, others are really excited about this since this is in their home country, and also in their home city (including the writer). People are also finding that the time zone differences are somewhat annoying as well as the Covid restrictions.
The 20th of February will be the final day of the 2022 Winter Olympics. So far, in terms of medals, the top 3 countries are: Norway coming in first place with 16 golds, 8 silvers, and 13 bronze; Germany coming in second place with 12 golds, 10 silvers, and 5 bronze; and China coming in third place with 9 golds, 4 silvers, and 2 bronze. It looks like a tight third-place race for China because the US, Sweden, and the Netherlands are just 1 gold away, so anything can happen on the last day. Goodbye Winter Olympics and see you in 2026.
