By Perla Lepage, Year 11
Plainly said, 2020 was a strange year. One of the best ways to describe last year was stated by The Washington Post, for whom 2020 was:
“A television show that never knows when to end”.
The film industry was drastically affected by the pandemic with the majority of the movies and series that were to premiere had to be postponed. However, now is the time to look forward, and 2021 is a whole new year for the movie industry, despite the schedule of new releases being movies that were meant to come out last year. Already in the beginning of March, it is clear that the Covid-19 pandemic is far from over and many movies have already been postponed again (especially since many movie theatres around the world are still closed). Movies such as James Bond: No Time to Die, Ghostbusters, and Morbius have been pushed back yet again.
Watching movies inside a theatre with friends and family will be a crucial signal that we’re coming out the end of the dark tunnel. So here a few examples of this year’s revised office box calendar showing when (or if) 2021’s major movies arrive in theatres (and/or online):
To start off strong, we have the most anticipated movie of 2020 now coming out on October 8th, 2021 after being pushed back for the third time.
No Time to Die, James Bond: In his final 007 movie, Daniel Craig takes on his hardest mission yet. After leaving active service and enjoying a tranquil life in Jamaica, he must take out his tux from the back of his closet and put on his best hero act when his old friend from the CIA turns up asking for help. His mission is to rescue a kidnapped scientist which turns out to be far more treacherous than expected! He will have to combat villains armed with new and dangerous technology.
Our favorite Fast & Furious family members are gearing up for an even bigger return than ever before in the new Fast & Furious 9 due to come out on May 28th. Dominic Toretto and his family must now face another deadly assassin. However, this time it is not anyone, it’s Dominic’s younger brother who holds a personal vendetta against Dominic and who is working with their old enemy Cipher. Brace yourself dear reader, because this is going to be like nothing you have ever seen before.
On June 4th, we can all be ready to sit in the theater (or possibly our living room) and watch The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. The movie is based on the true story of a murder trial in which the defendant claimed demonic possession. This marked the first time in U.S history that a murder suspect would claim demonic possession as a defense.
Scarlett Johansson repeats her role in the new movie, Black Widow, due for release on May 7th. The movie is based on Natasha Romanoff and her many quests between the movies Civil War and Infinity War.
On September 17th, the sequel of the hit from 2018 is due to come out, A Quiet Place Part II. Emily Blunt takes the role of the protagonist in a post-apocalyptic tale of a world in which noise equals death. Directors and producers want to keep postponing the movie until we can see it in a packed theater as it is an important part of the experience, because of the tension building up when trying to eat your snack very quietly.
Planned to come out on November 19th, Mission Impossible 7 starring Tom Cruise has everyone on the edge of their seats after the success from Mission Impossible Fallout that came out in 2018. Although there is no released plot of the movie, we are all ready for it. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to be first in line for the theaters (hopefully they’re open) when it premieres.
We’ve been waiting for over 30 years for the sequel and now it has finally arrived. Tom Cruise again is in full speed on July 2nd in the sequel to his world hit from 1986, Top Gun: Maverick. Captain Pete Mitchell, legendary US navy pilot, returns as a warrior of the skies, for yet another of his missions.
On March 5th, Coming 2 America was released and here we find a true comedy/rom-com. Newly-crowned King Akeeem and his confidante set off on an “all-new hilarious adventure” that has them travelling the word from their great African nation to Queens, New York- where it all began.
And finally, a movie that premiered on January 14th, reminding us of what we do not want to be reminded of:
Locked Down tells the story of a troubled couple, played by stars Anne Hathaway and Chiwetel Ejiofor, who take advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown to pull off a jewelry heist in an empty store. This rom-com and heist-movie hybrid expressed the typical feeling of confinement and grief that many around the world felt.
Listed below are a few other movies that are due to come out this year:
