LGB’s Prospective Doctors: a Medical Society Spotlight

By Thessabel Chang, Y12

The Medical Society is a club where enthusiastic students from years 9 to 13 share their aspirations, knowledge, and learning experiences. We welcome anyone with a passion for medicine or considering a career in the medical field. We support each other with findings of work experience, enriching opportunities, and advice from professionals. We meet at the STEM Centre every Friday from 10:35 – 10:55 and remain active on our Instagram account @medicalsocietyclub.

Medical Society is a forum where students exchange and evaluate medical advancements and scientific ideas, as well as come together to reach the purpose of gaining an enriching experience and knowledge of medicine. Our weekly meetings consist of preparation for university and exams such as the UKCAT and BMAT, a career in the medical field, and gaining knowledge and advice from guest speakers such as medical school students and biology teachers. The Medical Society is also dedicated to fundraising for Mercy Ships: an NGO committed to providing underprivileged populations access to health care and specialized surgical care. The Medical Society, full of aspiring medical practitioners, is fascinated by the commitment and kindness of this organization. We raise money with our annual secret Santa cookies as well as bake sales and sponsored walks throughout the year.

Ever since the academic year started in September of 2020, we’ve laid out three core goals. One is collaborating with other clubs holding like-minded interests. This is why we have established a collaboration with the Sports Society of LGB.  This is an opportunity to promote healthy living and wellbeing, especially during the unprecedented time of a global pandemic. Sports Society is a club that discusses and debates sport-related topics, as well as nutritional and recovery tips. They have also implemented an Activity Programme which encourages students to exercise on a weekly basis. Medical Society will discuss the importance of exercise for our health and wellbeing. We will also cover the chemistry and biology behind sports and exercise, due to the fact that Science and Biology are crucial subjects to take in the IB Diploma Programme for aspiring medical school students.

As for our upcoming projects, the Medical Society is fundraising along with Xpatria in hopes of raising more funds and awareness to support those affected by the disaster that struck Beirut, Lebanon’s capital, on the 4th of August. We hope to integrate both meaningful projects to create a powerful impact on many lives by equipping those in need with proper healthcare.

We have also finished fundraising for a project that launched in December, and are beginning to order and audit. We will be bringing hands-free door openers to the LGB Ecolint campus in hopes of creating a healthier and cleaner environment on campus, as well as potentially curbing the spread of the coronavirus.
