Spirit Week was held during the last week of school back in December. All of LGB’s community was encouraged to come in a different outfit for each of the days of the week, as planned by Juice StuCo. Here is a recap of some of the best outfits and student reactions to the event.
Monday: Ugly Sweater Day
Starting off the week was ugly sweater day, where students and teachers were encouraged to wear their most unattractive festive sweaters. Many of the sweaters were bright, colorful, and had fun slogans.
Here are a few highlights:
Mr. Osman and M. Gatta
Chiara, Y11
Ms. Kretzmeier and Anya Markovitz, Y12
Chloe Helbling, Y12
Tuesday: Black Tie/Fancy Dress
Tuesday was the day for students to dress up in their fanciest outfits. This was also set up for students participating in SLN so that they would have the opportunity to dress formally, as they would have done in previous years when the event was held at the UN. This was the third most popular day according to students, and many participated by wearing business attire.

Wednesday: Student-Teacher Switch
The most popular day amongst those polled seemed to be the student-teacher switch, where many students dressed up as favorite teachers and even posed with them in pictures. Even a few teachers (including Dr. Hughes) participated, dressing up as one of their students. The costumes proved to be funny and often very accurate. One student said it was their favorite day “because it was fun to see all the pictures and the teachers’ reactions were funny.”
Here are a few of the best pictures from Wednesday.

Thursday: Throwback Thursday
Throwback Thursday was also very well received as many students enjoyed seeing some of the fun outfits from the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s that people wore. The most popular decade was the 70s, with many showing up in bell bottoms and flower crowns.

Friday: Pajama/Comfy or Monochromatic Outfit
Friday’s dress code was announced by Juice StuCo’s Instagram account on Thursday evening following a poll of students. Many showed up in their pajamas or comfiest clothes to celebrate the end of the semester.

Overall Student Reactions
Around a third of students said they dressed up for at least one of the days in Spirit Week, when polled. Additionally, many teachers participated, with teachers like Mr. Yannic, M. Gatta, Mr. Rodriguez, Ms. Kretzmeier, Dr. Hughes, Ms. Newman, Mr. Osman, and Mr. Eddis notably wearing costumes. And of course, those who didn’t dress up still enjoyed seeing other people’s costumes.
As for the actual idea, student reactions to Spirit Week were mixed. Eli Bertuccioli, Y12, said he enjoyed dressing up for each of the days as well as seeing other classmates’ costumes. However, other students felt that it was less useful; one source I spoke to said it was “pointless” and had “unoriginal ideas,” saying that “no one does it because it’s high school.” However, they did concede that “I think people did the last day because they got to vote on it.”
In the future, many students had ideas for next year to make Spirit Week even better. Jahnavi Babbar, Y11, suggested ‘Twin Tuesday’, and Chiara, Y11, had the idea of a holiday theme with beach or ski clothing. Jonah O’Toole, Y11, proposed the idea of flip flop day. Other ideas included dressing like singers and summer clothes on winter day.
Overall, the existence of Spirit Week may not have been fully appreciated by the student body, but a lot of people seemed to enjoy seeing the costumes, especially where the teachers were involved. Thank you to Juice StuCo for organizing the event and for posting some of the highlights on their Instagram!
