On the 19th of April, there was a panel created, to discuss the topic of STEM learning. I, being invited to listen and give my opinion on the subject, was one of the panel members. Parents were invited so that they can ask questions discuss what the future of STEM is, and what role the STEM center will play at LGB in the future. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.
The STEM center is an environment where students will be able to learn new things they can use to their own advantage so that they can come up with innovative and new ways to not only solve problems we face today but as well as get prepared for the future since computers and robotics will be the future and many of us will have to learn how to use it in order to keep pace with technology. For example there will be courses on programming which will be especially important in the future because a lot of things will be involving computers in the future. By teaching students and exposing them to such things at this stage, they will be able to deal with rapid and advanced changes technology has undergone through during our generation. STEM learning will be linked to other subjects. For example, in geography weather patterns are studied and students will be able to monitor a weather station. We will also learn how to use media so that we can voice our concerns and use our freedom of speech to make a difference.
The STEM Center was created in the first place for all students. Anyone can use the STEM center as long as they don’t break school rules of course.
Personally speaking, I believe that we should pursue and try and make effort to make the sciences easier and more accessible to students and, with STEM learning, it will be easier to do so. However, the problem arises from the willingness of the students as well as whether or not students will use the center in a responsible way. If students don’t think that STEM learning is very important then quite possibly they might find the center to be useless. Some may argue that it unnecessary to build and entire thing in order to get people interested in science or letting them express their creativity in an innovative way. Although I agree with that statement, I think it would be easier to do what was mentioned before if the center was built.
