What teachers do in their free time

By Hannah Durham-Arnold, Year 10

Ever wondered why your teachers still haven’t given that paper back? Well, the answer is because they have a life too!

It is difficult to imagine teachers outside of the classroom, which creates a great barrier to how well we know the people we see nearly everyday. So, we went around school to interview a few teachers on what they do in their pass time. Their responses are quite interesting.

Gym and dance teacher, Mrs. Smith spends most of her time afterschool caring for her 2 children and her dog. She likes to go bike riding (more specifically, downhill mountain riding) which takes lots of training and preparation. Since her and her kids like bike riding, they often go to the BMX track in their free time; and with winter just around the corner, Mrs Smith likes to go snowboarding with the whole family in the mountains.

English teacher Mrs. Kretzmeier likes to read “non school books” or watch TV shows when she can, however due to work and a son, there just isn’t much spare time.

The spanish teacher, Señor Jose likes spending time with his family and two kids.

When not working, maths teacher Mrs. Fahy and her husband go to their local pub to play darts. She is a member of a darts team called Ferero, of which she used to be the captain http://www.genevadarts.ch/home.html. They play every Thursday during the season they’re even in the Geneva darts league. She came across this hobby from a teacher who used to work at the school ( Mr. Chaplin), and even left a parent teacher interview to go play darts.

The third Sunday of every month Mrs. Fahy goes driving round the countryside in old timer cars. She owns a 1974 MGB for all you car lovers out there. Her husband helps organise rallys for expert driving, in which they compete with other drivers. These rallies involve lots of maths and navigation skills which make them the perfect hobby for Mrs. Fahy.

English teacher Mr. Power likes to read in his spare time. He likes fantasy books in particular. If he’s not reading, he’s probably writing.

Student support, Washington likes to play sports and compose songs. He is a musician ( you may have seen his posters around school) who writes songs of all genres eg. Rock, jazz, funk in many languages. You can find him on spotify, apple music and more under “Washington Espínola”

To conclude, teachers may not be just as boring as we think. So remember that when you bug them to give you your test back.
