Horror Movie Review: The Nun

By Indeaki Rune Year 11, “A priest with a haunted past and a novice on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate the death of a young nun in Romania and confront a malevolent force in the form of a demonic nun.” It’s spooky season and everyone wants to go out and watch some scary movies with their friends; however, is it really worth it?

The summary previously stated, found on IMDb, recaps the recent movie The Nun. A part of The Conjuring movie series, it’s considered a rather disappointing horror movie by the majority of movie critics. For example, Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 26% and a 4.4/10. These results don’t look good but what do the students of Ecolint have to say about this horror film?

A lot of students agreed with Mervan Gozal who really went into depth when I interviewed him… here is what he had to say: “Regarding the Nun film, I found the SFX, makeup and character design to be very well done and professional as they kept it simplistic and easy to look at. The main character had white clothing while the rest of the nuns had regular black which made for some really cool and interesting scenes…”

When asked about personalities though, he had a different view. “For the characters themselves: they were very predictable and we didn’t connect with any of the main characters. To be honest, I did not care for anyone in the movie, they were lifeless to me.”

That one sentence already says a lot about how the characters really disappointed the audience. Another student I interviewed said the same thing: “The visual effects were nice but the characters didn’t really seem developed, they were kind of just there and the dialogue was dull and boring. The story has a lot of potential but the pacing was horrible. It was way too slow, leaving a lot of scenes with absolutely nothing happening, which left people bored and hoping for a scare.” This student actually fell asleep in the theater while watching.

Mervan continues about the story though and says “Most of the scenes were boring and cliche… People expected a full, interesting backstory, going deep inside on how Valek came to be, does what she does and how she toys with her victims. I wish the film had more focus on the villain and not the heroes, it would have made a new and unique way to make a horror film. Alas, we were led astray as only two scenes in the whole movie mention Valek’s past. It should have been named ‘The Conjuring 3’.”

When asked about what he would rate the film, he responded with a 6/10, stating it was a fun film to watch with friends and that it did give a few spooks here and there. However, there wasn’t anything special and it was not considered memorable.
