Sports Recap: Volleyball 19/05/18

On the 19th of May, LGB participated in the national volleyball tournament for International Schools in Zurich. Traveling there by train, the younger team consisted of 11 players which was enough to form one team of 6 players with substitutes. Although there were several players from year 9, the majority of the team included year 8 students. For many, it was their first time going to a competition. For those who were more experienced with competitive tournaments, it was an opportunity to play against new schools outside of the Geneva area.

Unfortunately, LGB lost their edge a bit during the matches and ended up coming 6th. We did, however, have a close match against ISL!  The girls from year 8 were playing against girls who were one or two years older than them, but they always gave it their all and stayed optimistic. The girls were happy to at least get some experience and were able to enjoy the weekend with their fellow teammates and coach.

“I think it’s really important for competitive sports teams to go to competitions. Not only is it something different, but it really pushes the players to learn more and develop skills that they usually wouldn’t develop at school practice. I think it helps the players realize that there are other teams out there that they have to play against. Our team didn’t place as well as we hoped for, but we are still proud of how we played and I think that’s important.”

– Margaux Francioli, Year 9

“It was a great experience because we played with a different team than usual and got to meet new people. I think we could have played better but it was still really fun and I enjoyed it.”

– Ela Abbou, Year 9

“For me, this competition was an unforgettable experience. The games were hard, but it was good to be a part of it because we got the chance to see how others play. We all encouraged each other and tried to stay optimistic.”

– Alexia Hibner, Year 8

“Although we woke up really early, around 5:30, to go to Zurich for the competition we were very motivated and ready for the competition and ready to play. We didn’t feel tired or anxious because we were so encouraged by our teammates and our coach. Overall it was a really good experience. We had fun all together and cheered for each other during the games. The main thing is that we had a lot of fun during the whole competition as well as the trip in general.”

– Regina Trevino, Year 9
