By Shiraz Rimer, Year 11
From a tender age, our generation has been repeatedly lectured about the deteriorating state of our planet. Our brains are constantly drilled with worrying statistics and facts about the environment. But why, just why, aren’t we, as individuals and citizens of the earth, not doing anything about it? Maybe we are lazy- or maybe we think: “I can’t do anything about it anyways…”
The Happy Fish group is here to tell you: you can make a change. Happy Fish is a group made up of year 12 students who are fighting against plastic pollution. Judie Rimer, Esther Fedorovski, Raquel Trevino, Perdy Pierce Jones and Shirin Chorfi have started a movement, here at Ecolint, to ban disposable plastic on our campus. They’re first achievement: banning disposable plastic bottles in the cafeteria. As well as raising awareness about plastic pollution, they are raising money to build more water fountains around our school. They are currently designing water bottles that they will sell to us students. This is to urge us to stop buying disposable plastic bottles and switch to a more ecological solution. They are also creating a website where people can directly donate to the cause as well as ask questions concerning plastic pollution. They are working alongside an organization called Drop it Youth. Drop it Youth is a platform for an international campaign to ban disposable plastic in schools. They have ambassadors in many schools such as in ours, La Chat and Nation. If you want to stay up-to-date with the team’s work follow their Instagram: @happyfishproject_ ! The Happy Fish group is also looking to start a discussion group so make sure to contact them (via instagram or email) to tell them if you are interested and would like to join.
Just remember, Happy fish = happy life 🙂
