Book Review – The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes

By Ina Lin Y 10, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes is one of the best collections of the great detective’s adventures by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This book has many fascinating cases, including “Silver Blaze”, the seemingly plain disappearance of a horse that reveals itself to be something that no one expected; “The Greek Interpreter”, where Holmes elucidates the truth behind Mr. Melas the interpreter’s strange and eerie experience involving a man being kept prisoner in a mysterious house; and “The Musgrave Ritual”, one of Sherlock Holmes’s very first cases.

“Silver Blaze” takes place in Devonshire on the eerie moor. The moor is possibly one of the best settings for a detective story; with its extreme landscape contrasts and baleful weather, it adds a great sense of tension, urgency and suspense to the case that makes it all the more interesting.

This collection of Sherlock Holmes’s cases presents a few of the detective’s early cases, which shows how Holmes first starts using his singular powers of deduction. These cases will be of great interest to anyone who is a fan of Sherlock Holmes.

“The Great Interpreter” also introduces Sherlock’s brother, Mycroft, for the first time. Mycroft is a quite peculiar character which makes for some very comical moments that should not be missed by anyone.

Whether you are very familiar with Conan Doyle’s infamous character or are reading Holmes’s adventures for the first time, this book will appeal to anyone who takes an interest in mysteries. Need a reading book for English? The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes is a great choice as it is not incredibly long but presents many clever stories and elements that can be subject to analysis if needed. The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes is a must read for everyone!
