LGB_Undercover: Fight_Club

Dear LGB,

It’s been a long time…

For awhile, I thought that my journals raised awareness for how immature and intolerant we are towards our campus, and hence caused a change for the better. But in light of recent events, I realised that I am in fact not yet relieved of my services, for I have not covered a surprisingly common subject: fighting.

Fighting has always been Hollywood’s favorite way to settle an argument, and so has become a romanticized dream amongst people –winning a fight is like winning the nobel prize for street credits. However, there is a major difference between a fight due to sudden fury and rage (i.E. a “bar fight”) and an organized fight where people were invited to watch (and film). Once the fight is organized, the reason to fight suddenly fades and is replaced by “now I’m in this and I better win, or my reputation is ruined” –imagine, people are willing to beat each other up for the sake of keeping up their image. If you’ve ever been so lucky as to watch one of LGB’s myriad of fights, you will realise that the only thing on the fighters’ minds is “KILL KILL KILL” and not “You shouldn’t have said … to me”; the students are degraded from civilized beings to rugged –yet self-conscious– beasts. That is one of the major reasons why these ‘fight-clubs’ are unacceptable.

However, not only are the fighters in the wrong, but so are the spectators. Rumor has it that our most recent offense wouldn’t have happened had the two ‘greasers’ not been peer pressured by their peers –searching solely for a source of exhilaration. This fact is so unbelievably horrid, because it goes to show that we are no better than the decadent Romans cheering on a gladiator fight. In addition, as one of the many students that has once attended a fight, I realise the consequences that could’ve come across my not intervening: for say one of the fighters becomes paralysed, I would have to live the rest of life with the weight of their paralysis on my shoulders, because I was just too cool to intervene.

In conclusion, I believe these fights should lead to direct expulsion, especially after Dr. Hughes’ passionate and poignant speech. However, due to the school’s previously mentioned lenient-tolerance, our two most recent ‘champions’ will come back to school cooler than ever, without having learned anything concrete, surrounded by sheep that idolize them.

With kind disregards,

John Doe
