Behind the scenes at the production of the Y11 play Blood Brothers

Blood Brothers is a play written by Willy Russell in the 1980s. The play was first performed at a school in Liverpool in November 1981. The plot revolves around twin brothers who are split up at birth and are then brought up in different families from different social classes. Set in the 1960s, this gripping satirical drama is divided into two acts that follow the friendship between these ‘blood brothers’ who are drawn from each other by their different backgrounds and lifestyles. The play sheds light on social inequality and how social class plays a role in the opportunities presented to a person. The play is a roller coaster of emotions, with lots of highs and lows which will keep you at the edge of your seat.

This period drama was chosen by Mr. White from the performing arts department as the Year 11 drama production. Therefore this week, I had the opportunity to speak to the head of marketing for the play, Louis Raymond. I was able to get an insight into the behind the scenes at the production of Blood Brothers.

The theatre class consists of about 25 students and with an insufficient number of key roles there was fierce competition to land the top role, thus an audition process was required. In the end, multiple people will be playing the same character in turns, and to add to this, some will be cast as narrators.

At this point in time, the roles of characters have been finalized which has led to the gentle commencement of the long process of memorizing and practicing the play’s script. So far, the production crew has finished rehearsing the play’s opening scene and are working at a steady pace in their twice-weekly practice sessions. When asked about the general vibe and ambiance during the rehearsals, Louis said, “I feel like we have a great team this year and I think that the play is going to be amazing”.

The play will be directed by drama teacher Mr. White with assistance from Ms. Lynch. The Blood Brothers cast will continue to keep rehearsing throughout the colder months of winter as they finish practicing and refining the play. They are planning to be able to present the show to an audience next spring and luckily for them this time they should not have the burden of COVID restrictions limiting the number of people who can come and watch them.

If you have any queries regarding the play, do not hesitate to contact Louis on the marketing team by email at bloodbrothers.lgb@gmail.com. Also do not forget to follow their official Instagram page @bloodbrothers_lgb to stay in the loop for any updates and developments about the play.

Louis, Mr. White, and the cast of Blood Brothers can’t wait to welcome you in spring to come to watch and enjoy the play!
